Great post, and happens to correspond with my renewed commitment to go light. Unlike most canoe trippers I know, I began by going light, but as years passed my load got heavier and heavier. Currently, spending the winter reverting back. No knife or hatchet/saw though. I consider these essentials.

I love my Driclime. I've had it since probably '98, and the zipper gave out last year. I sent it in to Marmot and they replaced the zipper with no questions asked. I'm sure they would have given me a new one if I had wanted it. They're a stand-up company that builds the best coat.

I like where you're coming from with this Bryan. We'd cut down our gear considerably from when we paddled the Mississippi River, and we were already going fairly light. More gear = more hassles.

Oh yeah, I live in my Marmot Driclime windshirt at least 10 months of the year. It's by far my most-used piece of gear, and holding up strong for over 9 years now.

Take care,

-John

[...] Well, I wanted to test how well cell phones would work for me in the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area, maninly because family members (Who can argue with their mom, right?) expressed concern that I should be carrying a phone with me on my solo trips, so on my last trip I brought one with me. If it worked, it would become standard gear in my pack (My Gear List). [...]
