Rocky Talkie Supports Search and Rescue
I don’t typically write about press releases that I receive, but I feel like this one is important. I recently wrote about what journalists get wrong when reporting on paddling fatalities, but I seldom write about the people who risk their lives to rescue paddlers that get into trouble. Recently Joe Friedrichs, a friend of mine, wrote about paddling accidents, emergencies, and tragedies in the Boundary Waters in his book Last Entry Point: Stories of Danger and Death in the Boundary Waters. In that book, he interviewed some search and rescue people, so it was a fun read to see things from their perspective. I’ve also known people involved in SAR, and they are dedicated to doing that job whether paid or volunteer. So, it’s great to see that Rocky Talkie is supporting them.

Rocky Talkie has pledged that for every radio sold, they will give $2 to outdoor safety. They’ve been doing this since 2020 and have donated over $260,000 to help SAR teams. They supported 27 teams in the U.S. and Canada so far. They offer three grant tiers at the $25k, $10K, and $5K levels. If you’re involved with SAR or not, you can learn more here.
I live in Cook County, Minnesota and we have part of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in our county. Our local SAR team is all volunteer and you can hear about what they do in this WTIP interview. If you get into trouble in the BWCAW in Cook County, these are the folks that will come to the rescue.
I have a pair of Rocky Talkies that I use in the Boundary Waters, and I really love them. It’s great to be able to communicate within our group. Here’s my Rocky Talkie review.
