Photography and Paddling Mix in My New Video
The other morning, I paddled out to a location that I’ve wanted to photograph at sunrise for a couple of years. I paddled about 20 to 30 minutes in the dark and landed under cloudy skies. I thought it was going to be a big bust.
In the end, the clouds broke up and the sunrise was amazing! Pictures below. The video I made from the morning is a mix of paddling and photography. Most of my photography is landscape photography, but if I’m traveling by canoe or kayak I’ll put a canoe or kayak into the landscape. It’s a combination of the two activities that I love most.
I shot the entire video on the DJI Osmo Pocket. The Osmo Pocket is a gimbal-stabilized video camera that shoots up to 4K 60fps video. I really love it. It can also hook up to your phone via a wifi module or a direct connection so that you have a bigger screen to work with. If you get one, get a set of ND filters as well and the scroll wheel. The ND filters help control the shutter speed so that you get a shutter that’s double of your frame rate. That’s suppose to give you a nice cinematic look. The scroll wheel helps get silky smooth pans.
I hope to do more videos like this, but so far this year, I’ve only managed to make two videos. Crossing my fingers to do more. I’m a photographer and not a videographer, so there’s a learning curve. I need to figure out how to get more interesting B-roll footage, and I need to learn how to get better at being on camera and knowing what to say.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video and pictures. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Lose the music on this video! It doesn’t mix well with the sunrise and the serenity of the scenery. Perhaps a little piano sonata, or something !

I suppose music is personal. I love chillhop and similar music. I listen to it often. A piano sonata would be grating to my ears, and because of that it isn’t something that I’d use in a video. I even took a semester class in college about how to appreciate classical music. I tried hard and attended many symphony orchestras, etc., but I could never enjoy that type of music.
